Altered Beast es un beat´em up en el que controlamos a un centurión que murió en batalla. Este centurión fue traído de la muerte por Zeus para rescatar a su hija Atenea de Neff, el malvado Señor del Mundo Oculto. El jugador pelea contra no-muertos y hordas demoníacas, controlando al héroe cambiante de forma. Hay que superar varios niveles para rescatar a la diosa secuestrada. En el camino nos encontraremos con cerberos azules que tendremos que cazar. Una vez muertos, soltarán una pequeña esfera espiritual que comenzará a flotar, y si conseguimos atraparla veremos como el cuerpo de nuestro protagonista se va transformando aumentando su musculatura hasta la 3º esfera espiritual, en la que se transformará en una bestia muy poderosa (Metamorfo) que variará en función del nivel en el que estemos. Para abrirnos camino usaremos puñetazos y patadas (en forma humana) o ataques a distancia como bolas de energía (cuando estamos transformados en bestias).

Description

Altered Beast is a platform/fighting game. The game casts the player as a hero resurrected by Zeus to rescue his daughter, Athena. The game takes place in a setting resembling Ancient Greece, complete with gods, temples and ruined Ionic columns. The game play is accompanied by lively background music.

The player must battle armies of fictional and undead creatures to his goal of defeating the evil sorcerer Ned, who is holding Athena captive. Along the way, the player may obtain power-ups which increase his strength and appearance. If four are collected, the hero transforms into a beast with exceptional abilities.

In Altered Beast the player plays a hero who must fight undead hordes. The hero gets more powerful and eventually turns into a powerful mythical beast.

The game contains several levels which the player must battle through. At the end of each level is a "boss" creature, each one attacking in novel though somewhat similar ways. The enemies the player encounters differ depending on level as is the "beast" the hero transforms into. These beasts include the werewolf, dragon, tiger, bear, and the more powerful golden werewolf. Each beast has it's own special ablilities, such as the dragon's ability to fly. Between each level is are small animations giving the player glimpses of Athena's peril.

The game was moderately successful, the player's ability to transform into different creatures being a big draw. The game actually does have an ending where the player rescues Athena. At the completion of the game, when you have defeated Ned in the city of Dis, Zeus thanks you for your help, whereafter the game treats you to a long series of credits.
